Bacillus subtilis biofungicide

Bacillus subtilis · efficacy moderate · evidence strong · bees safe

How it works

A beneficial bacterium that colonises the leaf and root surface first and produces natural antifungal compounds, leaving no room for pathogens to establish. Preventative, living, and self-renewing.

Recipe

Per label, usually as a drench for seedlings or a spray on foliage.

How to apply

Apply before disease appears - at pricking out, at transplanting, and ahead of humid weather.

Targets — pests

Not recorded — the field is blank rather than guessed.

Targets — diseases

Botrytis, Powdery mildew, Damping off, Root rot

Supplies: Bacillus subtilis product

Days to harvest after spraying: 0

Best months: not recorded

Cautions

It occupies space rather than curing infection: on an established outbreak it will do little. Keep refrigerated; it is alive.

The thing people get wrong

Think of it as taking the seats before the fungus arrives. Applied to seed trays it is one of the few genuinely effective answers to damping off, which is otherwise the thing that quietly kills more seedlings than any pest.
