Late blight
Phytophthora infestans · Míldio da batata e do tomate
What you see
Dark water-soaked patches on leaves with pale green halos; white mould fuzz underneath in humid mornings; brown lesions racing down stems; fruit and tubers rot.
Conditions
Warm humid spells with wet nights - Atlantic summer weather. Can destroy a tomato patch in a week.
Treatment
Cut out infected growth immediately and bin it (never compost); copper slows spread on what remains; harvest sound fruit early.
Prevention
Preventive copper before humid spells; water at soil level in the morning; space widely for airflow; never plant near last year's potatoes.
